Hello everyone!  My name is Kristen Barry.  I am 46 years old; a wife, mother of two girls, Clinical Psychologist, and Healthy Cancer Chick!  I know what your thinking….healthy and cancer don’t belong together….but I believe they do and in my case the cancer was a wake up call to change my life and get healthy and happy.

If I was told to list the top 100 ways that I thought I would die, breast cancer would not have even made the list.  In High School I was President of the IBTC (all you flat chested women know what that is).  In math class once I remember one of the boys saying I was an example of concave!  My maiden name is Totten and the kids use to call me Titless Totten (all in fun I’m sure).  In college, my BFF once told me that I had no boobs only nipples (easy for her, the double D, to poke fun).  So, you can imagine my extreme and utter shock when I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

In 2010 I had just moved from Central New York, and the unfulfilling, dead-end job I was stuck in, to the sunny East coast of Florida.  It is amazing how the change in climate really wakes up your senses and gives you drive to get healthy.  Even before the dreaded diagnosis I was inspired by the wonderful weather and fit people here to start eating better and exercising more.

After I was told that I had a “life threatening illness,” I was quickly thrown into the traditional Slash/Poison/Burn treatment regimen a.k.a. surgery/chemotherapy/radiation therapy.  No other options were discussed or ever brought up casually in conversation.  I was new to the area and putting my trust in Doctors that I knew nothing about and had minimal supports.  I did what most good patients do and followed their orders.  I’m not saying that the Doctors weren’t and aren’t still working hard to save my life, but after doing relentless hours and hours of research on the internet, reading books, and connecting with others from around the world I have come to realize that I am the most important authority on my body and my life.  That being said, I will go to any length to do what I can to live longer, live happier, and live healthier!

Thus begins my Healthy Cancer Chick journey.  I want to share with all of you the healthy things that I have learned along the way (and still learning) and the things that I am doing to feel good in body, mind and spirit.

  3. Kudos to you Kristen for coming out the other side more positive and healthier. You are such an inspirtation. Thank you for taking the time to put together this great web site. And thank you to my BFF for forwarding me this info.. I will look forward to your updates and following your journey. I am a 5 year survivor and have realized also we are our best advocates. I try to live a healthier lifestyle but also remembering to enjoy and have many moments that take my breath away. Living life to the fullest and remembering to balance the mind, body and spirit is becoming my way of life. 🙂

  4. My daughter recommended this site. I’m a 54 year old male with breast cancer. I’ll be going in to surgery on Thursday. The prognosis is good. It appears this was caught early and the type of cancer is one of the kind which isn’t aggressive. Certainly as with Kristen, this is the last kind of illness I’d have ever considered likely. I’m not overly worried. I have a great team of Drs dealing my situation and anticipate a good outcome. Still, it is what it is.

  5. Haha – I’m a flat-chestie too! At my wedding, 3 people told me to stuff my bra with tissues (I’m absolutely serious about that!!). So sorry to hear about your cancer, however; but it sounds like you’ve come out of it on top. Celeste 🙂
