Chai Smoothie (Non-dairy and only natural sugars)

Chai Smoothie

I just love chai drinks.  I love them cold.  I love them hot.  I love them anytime day or night.  But what I don’t love is the large amounts of sugar and dairy that usually comes with the drink if you order it from a restaurant or buy a bottled chai drink at the store.

For example, Starbucks Teavana® Iced Oprah Cinnamon Chai Tea Latte (Grande 16 oz) has a whopping 31 grams of sugar!  Get a Venti and you are looking at 38 grams of sugar!  A 12 oz can of coke has 39 grams of sugar. A snickers bar has 27 grams of sugar.  So drinking Oprah’s Chai Tea which has been marketed as a “healthy” drink is not really that healthy.  Dunkin’s medium-sized Vanilla Chai contains 45 grams of sugar!

What are you to do?  Well, make your own healthy version of course.  While this drink actually does not contain tea (and yes tea is very healthy and I drink several varieties often) it is a great drink for when you are craving something sweet and delicious but don’t want to feel guilty afterward or spend nearly $5 at the drive thru.  It is sweetened with natural sugars using dates and bananas and all the spices just make it heavenly.  You can leave out the ice and warm it up for a nice hot beverage too.

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 cup coconut water
1/4 cup dates
1 Tbsp chia seeds
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 Tbsp soaked almonds
1/8 tsp cardamom
pinch of ground cloves
2 frozen bananas (use only 1 banana for even less sugar)
1 cup ice

Mix all ingredients together in a Vitamix or high-speed blender and enjoy!  Just the smell alone puts me in a peaceful place and the taste…..ahhhh pure bliss.
