I have been hearing a lot lately of colds and illness “going around”. With flu and cold season quickly approaching most people will get their yearly flu shot and stack up on tissues and over the counter medicines, but are they helping or hurting? Do we need to go through this suffering and just accept it as “that time of year?” What can we do to prevent from getting sick in the first place and if we do become ill, how can we treat it naturally?
I have to say that with all the fruits and vegetables that my family and I eat, and everything we do to stay healthy (exercise, reduce or eliminate sugar, dairy and meat), we rarely get sick. Even if my kids bring a cold home from school, they seem to have a bit of a stuffy nose for a day or two and then they are back to normal. So my first bit of advice is to eat healthy, exercise and take care of yourself so you don’t get sick in the first place 🙂
Nobody really likes to take medicine. It usually tastes bad and we end up suffering other adverse effects from the medicine…so is it really worth it? The medicine may stop your nose from running or calm your cough but it makes you fatigued and sometimes dizzy, nauseous, gives your stomach problems or can cause you to break out in a rash.
Ever wonder why we take medicine to help some symptoms but end up with others? Don’t you wonder why they say on the labels “don’t take this medicine if you are pregnant, nursing, have diabetes, a heart condition, kidney problems, bleeding disorders, history of stroke, high blood pressure, liver problems, gout, Alzheimer’s, asthma, thyroid problems, immune system problem”, are left-handed, have 10 fingers and toes, are related to anyone with the name Bob…..you get the point! There is a reason why, it’s because these medicines aren’t themselves good for you.
Luckily there are natural remedies that you can try for many types of problems and illness. Check out this chart for a few examples.
Here are some great web sites that also use natural home remedies for “curing” many problems.
Take the time to find a natural cure and feel good about what you are taking. Don’t be too quick next time to run out to the pharmacy and buy those awful tasting, expensive medications that can actually cause more harm than good.
